Although many classrooms are organized where the seats are arranged in clusters/groups, I was inspired by this arrangement through a video that I watched. I thought that this arrangement allowed all the students to be accessible while also giving students choices about how they want to work. Although they are not organized in groups, the students can choose whether or not they want to work by themselves, with a partner, or move the tables around into groups.
Sugata Mitra: The Child-Driven Education
“If children have interest, then learning happens.” This video from TED explains how students, with no supervision or instruction, can teach themselves through curiosity. Education researcher, Sugata Mitra describes his studies with students around the world. One of his studies involved a groups of students from Hyderabad, India. These students all had a very strong Telugu accent. He left the students with a computer that had the speech to text interface. Because of their accent, the computer did not understand what they were saying, Mitra instructed them to find a way to be understood by the computer. Two months later, when Mitra returned the students’ accents had changed and became very close accent of the speech to text synthesizer. Through this research, I concluded that interest is a strong motivator and that technology is an excellent resource in education.
New technology in EVSC schools help students learn better.
I found this article very interesting. I think it did a really good job explaining the importance of using technology in classrooms. It explained the benefits of using technology and described some common uses.
- One teacher lets her Kindergarteners play with colors and numbers on the Promethean board installed in their classroom.
- One school allows students to rent out laptops to take home.
