|
How do we as teachers help develop globally competent students?
- As the teacher, it is our responsibility to ensure that students are given opportunities to strive in a learning environment that focuses on incorporating global issues. I plan on using some of the strategies found in the video below.
Four questions teachers should keep in mind when designing a lesson that teaches global competence:
- What topics matter most to teach?
- What exactly will students take away from a unit, project, visit, or course?
- What will students do to learn?
- How will we know they are making progress?

After find these examples, I plan on using some of these ideas to incorporate teaching global competency. I hope to create a learning environment which promotes global competency so that my students will have the skills necessary to succeed in the future. I will keep this source as a reference for more examples of how I can incorporate these strategies.

Investigate the World:
- Create a comparison chart about the investigated topic in your and another community or context.
- Collaborate with peers in another city or region to investigate a common topic of interest.
- Discuss the broader implications of your research findings to you, your close circle, and other affected people.
Recognize Perspectives:
- Interview individuals who are knowledgeable or experienced in the topic under study, describe their perspective and how it informs yours.
- Put yourself in the shoes of a character in the book you are studying and write a diary entry in response to an important incident in the novel.
Communicate Ideas:
- Prepare your project presentation to be delivered to different audiences (e.g., a group of experts, children in the elementary school, and individuals affected by the topic you are discussing).
- Create an interest group on your preferred social networking site to discuss a topic under study.
Take Action:
- Plan and conduct a project in your school that will contribute to improving conditions (e.g., reducing its carbon footprint) considering an evidence-based evaluation of its impact.
- Create a graphic that shows how your actions here and now do or could impact the lives of people in your family, neighborhood, and beyond regarding the topic you are studying.
